After “Heretofore” (Umlaut Records, 2015), “Sbatax” is the second CD by the duo of Bertrand Denzler and Antonin Gerbal. This time, the two musicians explore another side of their music, focusing on aspects such as flow, speed and patterns.
Denzler and Gerbal work together since 2011, whether as a duo or with groups and projects like Zoor, Denzler-Gerbal-Dörner, Onceim, CCP3 and Protocluster, which have released albums on Umlaut Records, Confront Recordings, DDS, Shiiin and Remote Resonator.

What the press said :
Noteworthy for this one-take October 2019 sesh is the unflagging energy of the music, which starts out as a skyrocket in the stratosphere and pretty much stays up for all of 38:40.

Anyone wondering whether there is still life in the tenor/drum duo format should dig this one up.

Sbatax is certainly a free jazz recording. But the language they choose to present on this cd is not a fixed form, but an open one. Open to new dynamic interpretations of the saxophone’s timbre, experimentations of the possibilities of the drums in all its percussive range (should I say rage?) while attending one another’s thoughts and ideas of how to proceed.
